For Fox News, Student Protests Are a Familiar Target

“Well, House Speaker Mike Johnson crashed Hamas’s spring break at Columbia today.”That quip came from the Fox News host Jesse Watters, who was interviewing Mr. Johnson on his prime-time show Wednesday. In response to a standoff between student protesters and the university’s president, Mr. Johnson had visited Columbia University’s campus, where students had set up encampments in solidarity with Palestinians. “So many of them, Jesse, don’t know what the heck they’re talking about,” Mr. Johnson said. Mr. Johnson’s appearance on “Jesse Watters Primetime” embodied the chiding and often adversarial tone of conservative media toward the latest wave of protests on college campuses over Israel’s campaign in Gaza. “There’s a difference between educated people and smart people,” Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and Fox News host, said on the network Tuesday.

Beth Linker Is Turning Good Posture on Its Head
  + stars: | 2024-04-26 | by ( Matt Richtel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
For decades, the idea of standing properly upright carried considerable political and social baggage. In the early 20th century, posture exams became mainstays in the military, the workplace and schools, thanks in part to the American Posture League, a group of physicians, educators and health officials that formed in 1914. In 1917, a study found that roughly 80 percent of Harvard’s freshman class had poor posture. But the actual science doesn’t support the conventional wisdom about proper posture, Beth Linker argues in her new book, “Slouch: Posture Panic in Modern America.” Dr. Linker, a historian and sociologist of science at the University of Pennsylvania, recently sat for an interview with The New York Times; the conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity. Your posture looks pretty good.

CNN —Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold says that the England squad will head to Euro 2024 believing it can win the European Championship in Germany this summer. Speaking to CNN’s Senior Sports Analyst Darren Lewis, the Three Lions defender was bullish about England’s chances at the Euros. That’s what we can achieve,” said Alexander-Arnold. It’s the furthest thing from arrogance, but you have to have confidence and believe you can win it, otherwise you can’t. “I would say midfield, I think, in an England shirt,” said Alexander-Arnold, who usually plays for Liverpool in defense as a right-back.

The Columbia protesters are also calling for the university to “disclose and sever all ties” with the New York Police Department. CNN —An unexploded World War II bomb is set to be defused on Friday after it was found near the home of Bundesliga soccer club Mainz 05. A statement from the city of Mainz said the 500-kilogram (1,102-pound) American bomb was found during construction work on Wednesday, before the local area was evacuated. The club shop at the stadium will also be closed Friday when the bomb is being defused, according to the team. The club is set to host FC Köln on Sunday as both teams fight to avoid relegation this season. The presence of unexploded World War II ordnance in Germany is common enough that companies often hire private bomb disposal teams to check that sites are safe when construction is planned.

‘Challengers’ Review: Game, Set, Love Matches

Guadagnino’s latest, “Challengers,” is about a continually changing love triangle involving two besotted men and a sharp, beautiful woman with killer instincts and personal style. Written by the novelist and playwright Justin Kuritzkes, “Challengers” is fairly straightforward despite its self-consciously tortured narrative timeline. It tracks three tennis prodigies — friends, lovers and foes — across the years through their triumphs and defeats, some shared. A rich boy who cosplays as poor (well, at least struggling), Patrick met Art when they were children at a tennis academy. It’s at that point that they met Tashi, then a fast-rocketing star.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday night downplayed the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which led to a woman’s death, as a “peanut” compared to the demonstrations happening across the US against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Trump also accused Biden in the post of hating Israel and the Jewish people, but hating the Palestinian people even more. “I condemn the antisemitic protests, that’s why I’ve set up a program to deal with that,” Biden said when questioned about the events at Columbia University in New York. Raine is looking to take stakes in leagues with rights they can monetize in various ways and invest in growing, founder-led companies. Raine says college sports still hold a big opportunity for outside investors, even if the structure of college athletics adds complexity. In 2019, Raine helped the Pac-12 Conference explore raising private equity (which it ultimately decided against doing). Stress at work is inevitable — but embracing it can help you become stronger, smarter and happier, according to one Ivy League expert. According to Wiens, the "most underrated" skill successful people use to stave off burnout is shifting their stress response from "fight-or-flight" to "challenge." You're probably familiar with fight-or-flight, the stress response that can happen when you encounter a perceived threat. Wiens discovered this correlation by studying people thriving in high-stress environments, including business executives and police chiefs. Practicing this alternative response can boost your resilience in the face of stress and, in turn, lead to better health, emotional well-being and productivity at work – even during periods of high stress, Wiens discovered.

Just as the offseason kicked off in mid February, Durde was hired to become the Seattle Seahawks’ new defensive coordinator, becoming the first British coordinator in NFL history. Durde’s first exposure to the NFL came in 2005 when – as part of the NFL International Development Practice Squad program, an early predecessor to the IPP – he spent some time on the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers. He spent three seasons as part of the Falcons’ defensive coaching staff, working across a number of roles under head coach Dan Quinn. With about four games left in the season, it became mathematically clear to the players and coaches of the Queens Park Ladies, an under-12 girls’ soccer team in Bournemouth, England, that they would win their league. But rather than resting on their laurels and enjoying their guaranteed victory, they decided to take it a step further: What if they not only won their league, but also did so without losing a match? If that wasn’t enough, they would be pulling it off as the only girls’ team in a boys’ league. The Queens Park Ladies did not lose any of their 22 matches, earning them the elusive nickname “Invincibles,” one that conjures the memory of Arsenal’s undefeated 2003-04 Premier League season under Arsène Wenger. “I just thought it was incredible that we’ve gone so far to beat some boys that are probably more physical than us,” Millie Ray, 11, a midfielder, said.
